With the holidays over, daddy back at work, and school back in session, James' second month of life gave me a more realistic glimpse of life with three young children. I spent a good chunk of time guarding little brother from his overly helpful siblings. Several times, God helped me thwart danger. Like the time John was about to administer gas drops, give him a lick of his candy cane, or clip his hang-nails. Lately, I always feel like a broken record because I am constantly reminding Belle and John to back away from James' head. Although my children are a far cry from gentle, they do love their little brother to pieces. I am thankful for their bond and God's abundant grace as we all continue to adjust to life with our sweet new addition.
Overall, the adjustment has not been too difficult, but we have had a few hard days. I wouldn't classify James as a fussy baby, but he has had a number of crying episodes. Thankfully, they were short lived, subsiding as soon as his gas bubble escaped. James may be my third child, but he is the first who truly taught me about the necessity of a burp cloth. Even with it on hand, I have to daily change his clothes and mine due to a blanket of spit up. John aptly put it, "James you sure are a sweet boy as long as you aren't spitting up." A few baby essentials which really rescued me this month were his upright sleeper, gas drops, my carrier, the video monitor, and the pacifier my baby decided to take during his 5th week of life!
With more awake periods this month, James became more interactive and playful. My heart melted the first time I saw his gummy little mouth smile up at me and coo. He absolutely adores his baby mobile, his ball and rattle. He will play alone for great lengths of time. I love to just watch him. It is hard to believe he is already 2 months old! Time be still!
