Promoting Resourcefulness

Belle: "I am building an outdoor desk, mom, can you please help me move these blocks?"
Me: "No, honey. You can use anything in the backyard you can move, but I am not dragging those blocks out."

I really did not want the blocks pulled out from behind the shed. I honestly thought she would find something else to use for her creation, but she quickly found a way to move the block herself with some help from her brother. Where there is a will there is a way!

Sometimes Belle makes something and forgets about it the next day, but that has not been the case with this outdoor desk. She has been eating, writing and playing at it for several weeks now. One day, she diligently sat at her block desk and informed me she was writing her first book. I think she was most proud of the binding she made for her book with her new stapler. As always, she found a way to include little brother in the process by designating him official paper holder.

Days later, Belle decided she needed to make copies of her book. She was engrossed in her project, but I assumed she would put her copy work on hold when her friend came over to play. Instead, she relocated to the picnic table and handed our neighbor a marker so she could help write. I almost suggested she just lay her work aside and play, but I am glad I did not interfere. The girls happily wrote together for almost an hour.

Joyful heart reminder: When we solve problems for our children, we limit their resourcefulness. Take joy in watching their little minds tick. Let them think! Let them play! :)
