Recess at our House
My memories of elementary school recess include jumping rope and talking to my friends. It always seemed like we were lining up to walk back into class the second we got out to the playground. My children, on the other hand, often enjoy long breaks midday to play in our backyard. Their recess time is always quite an adventure--and usually a messy one. I am sure some of our neighbors think I am crazy for letting them play in the mud or wash hair in a "bicycle pedal/puddle shower," but I believe in the magic of childhood. My kids don't see the ditch or the weeds in our yard. They see a rushing river, a mountain and a beautiful bouquet of flowers to pick for mom. Reality will sink in far too soon. And when it does, I hope they will cherish these early childhood days of creative play together.
