Beach and Fort Freemont trip

Since our Tennessee relatives were in town, we decided to interrupt our regular school schedule for a beach trip. Of course, we did some lessons before we left, on the way, and when we got home from the beach, but I enjoy having the freedom to be flexible with our school days. The kids had a blast wading in the water and burying each other in the sand with Uncle Mike-Mike and Aunt Cyndi.

Driving back into Beaufort, we took a spontaneous detour to explore Fort Freemont. I thought it would be a good field trip since we are studying American History, and it did prove to be an interesting experience. Unlike Fort Sumter, which caters to tourists, Fort Freemont has signage indicating to enter at your own risk. When we first walked in, Belle immediately grabbed Mike-Mike's hand, and I shared her feelings of wariness. As I looked around the old fort heavily vandalized and left for ruin, the place did seem rather eerie. With no pictures or detailed signage, it was hard to visualize what the fort looked like when it was constructed.

The longer we explored, the more interested and imaginative my young student became. She was full of questions about the fort, and suddenly she became eager to find the path leading to the beach. Once we found the water, she declared, "This is the best beach I have ever seen, it is just like the one in my dreams. It reminds me of Narnia too." She actually requested a picture be taken.

Although my knowledge of Fort Freemont is limited, I explained the little history I knew and emphasized the lack of military action it saw. Offhandedly, I mentioned Belle had probably never heard of the Spanish American War to which she promptly replied, "Oh yes, I have heard of that war, mom. It is in my timeline song." Then she burst into song. At that moment, I realized how powerful the history timeline can be. Becoming familiar with the names of important events help kids feel connected with their world, even if they know no nothing else about it yet.

Such a nice visit with the Harp family! Always a joy to spend time with family we don't get to see often!
